Winx gallops to yet another victory with her 19th win

  • Chasing her 19th straight win Winx did it again, making it 19 wins on the trot
  • The champion mare jumped brilliantly and but trailed even at the last 100metres
  • Winx then ended strongly running down Red Excitement in a barnstorming finish
  • Starting at the shortest odds of her career she took the 23rd title of her career

Racing royalty Winx – ridden by jockey Hugh Bowman – has done it again, taking first place in the Chelmsford Stakes with a barnstorming finish.

Starting at the shortest odds of her career with TAB Fixed Odds offering $1.09, the champion mare jumped brilliantly but trailed by at least two lengths at the 100m.

She showed her pedigree to rally strongly and overtake leader Red Excitement during the last 50m, rewarding loyal punters in the $250,000 at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

‘I could see what was happening. At the top of the straight I was really worried. What she did today is just incredible,’ said an elated Bowman after the race.

The victory was reminiscent of August’s Warwick Stakes at the same racecourse, where she was last into the straight after missing the start by four lengths.

As Foxplay shot through on the inside to take the lead, Winx looked to be in trouble before she rallied late to claim a win from her stablemate.

The close win was a far cry from her previous victory in April, when Winx took the Queen Elizabeth stakes by three and a half lengths.

Winx now has her sights set on the Cox Plate in October, where she hopes to win a third, equalling Kingston Town’s record.

Today’s win was the 23rd of her career, and the 19-race winning streak means the she has not been beaten for more than two years.
