Wisconsin man confesses to murdering his first wife on the 13th anniversary of her death

A Wisconsin man has confessed to the murder of his first wife and mother of his child, 13 years to the day after she went missing, according to police.

Keith Alan Comfort, 37, walked into the City of Lake Geneva Police Department on Sunday and told an officer he was responsible for the death of Megan Nicole Shultz, Lake Geneva Police Chief Michael S. Rasmussen said in a news release shared on Facebook.

Police say Comfort told them he strangled Megan, who was then 24, after she attacked him in a possibly drug-fueled rage and threw her body into the dumpster at their home, before reporting her missing to the Columbia, Missouri Police Department on August 4, 2006.

Comfort has been charged with second-degree murder related to Megan’s apparent death.

Comfort showed up to the City of Lake Geneva police station at approximately 1.35pm on Sunday and requested to speak with an officer regarding a missing person, police said.

Comfort was then interviewed by a City of Lake Geneva police officer, during which time Comfort implicated himself in Megan’s death.

Megan was last seen alive leaving the couple’s apartment in Columbia, Missouri on August 4, 2006, located on Amelia Street by Old Highway 63.

Megan’s mother, Debra Shultz, told KOMU she always suspected Comfort had done something to harm her daughter, who she described as ‘a beautiful girl’ who ‘was very talented musically.’

‘I just felt like something had happened in that apartment that one fateful night, and it did,’ Debra said. ‘Her life ended in that apartment on Amelia Street.’

Debra’s intuition was right. The probable cause statement drafted by police revealed that Comfort told authorities on Sunday a very different story about what happened to Megan 13 years go.

Comfort said Megan called him while he was at work and told him she had just cheated someone in a drug deal.

He said when he got home, Megan was ‘frantic, yelling and “swinging” her arms at him.’

Comfort said he then put his hands around her neck, strangling her as he brought her to the ground.

After he realized she was no longer breathing, Comfort said he placed her body inside of a garbage bag and ‘threw her into the…dumpster’ on site at their apartment complex.

At the time of her disappearance, Comfort told police that Megan left on foot wearing a pink tank top and white capri pants, leaving behind an infant daughter, Kaelin.

Comfort filed for divorce less than three weeks after she went missing.

He later remarried with another woman named Megan and moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin, but divorced with his second wife one year ago.

For the past 13 years, Megan Shultz's mother Debra had continued to hold out hope that Megan was out there somewhere, living a wonderful life, but deep down she said she knew she was gone. 'I put up flyers everywhere and her poster was listed on the rest stops all over Missouri. I gave everything I could to the police department and I continued to search,' Debra said

‘I hired detectives, I talked to bounty hunters and retired marshalls. I searched from one end of the country to the other,’ Debra said.

Comfort has been arrested and booked into the Walworth County Jail. He remains in custody at this time on a $1 million cash-only bond.

The investigation has been turned over to Columbia Police detectives.
