Infamous US fraudster Jordan Belfort has described two female Today Show hosts as ‘liars’ and ‘çlueless’ after they branded him a thief during a fiery television interview.

Belfort spent 22 months in prison after pleading guilty to fraud and money laundering in 1999, and has since rebuilt his life as a motivational speaker.

His crimes were detailed in his first memoir, The Wolf of Wall Street, which was later turned into the 2013 blockbuster of the same name, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Belfort’s interview with Today Show hosts Allison Langdon and Jayne Azzopardi on Sunday morning began on friendly terms as Belfort spoke from Los Angeles about an upcoming speaking event.

But the live television interview turned hostile when Langdon asked whether Belfort thought his new career was ‘ethical’, given his notorious criminal past.

‘I teach ethical persuasion and sales and ethical marketing. I have proved that again and again for many, many years. I don’t know know what you are talking about,’ he said.

The interview went downhill from there.

”At the end of the day you are a thief,’ Landgon said.

‘You call me a thief. I’m a thief right now?’ an exasperated Belfort hit back.

Langon replied: Yes, you are a thief. You went to jail for it. You defrauded victims of $220 million that we know of. What else are you?’

Belfort, frustrated with the line of questioning, then went toe to toe with the two hosts.

‘I really feel sorry for you. I really do. Not only your viewers not feel like this, it is really sad that you are saying this,’ he retorted.

‘I have certainly redeemed myself many times over. I find it shocking and sad. Sad for you, not for me. My life is wonderful.’

A fired up Belfort then went as far as labelling the Channel Nine female hosts as liars.

‘Don’t sit there and just lie on TV to your viewers,’he said.

‘You are all lying right now. You are completely fabricating a story that is not grounded in reality. It’s just not.’

The former stockbroker’s scams cost investors more than A$296 million (US$200 million).

When probed by the hosts, a defiant Belfort insisted the victims he ripped off had been repaid.

‘I don’t think that there is anyone left that owed money,’ he said.

‘At this point I don’t think that there are any investors left that haven’t been paid. No-one is asking for money. This money is sitting there for many, many years uncollected.’

The six minute cringeworthy interview finally ended when Belford issued a parting shot at the hosts.

‘You have no idea what you are talking about. You are clueless,’ he said.

‘I love Australia. Australians are wonderful. You personally are clueless though.’
