Wolves: Julen Lopetegui ‘could LEAVE after club reneged on promises over signings and investment’

Wolves’ saviour Julen Lopetegui ‘could LEAVE after the club reneged on promises over signings and investment’ with showdown talks planned for later this week as they battle to keep the Spaniard at Molineux

Julen Lopetegui’s future as Wolves manager is reportedly now in doubt due to the club’s financial issues and potential lack of investment this summer.

The Spaniard has guided Wolves to safety and secured Premier League football for another season after their rocky start to the campaign under Bruno Lage saw them struggle early on.

After turning Wolves’ season around, Lopetegui looked set to carry on at Molineux but is now considering his future away from the Midlands club with showdown talks set for later this week, according to Guillem Balague.

Balague revealed Wolves have reneged on promises to recruit more players this summer, labelling Lopetegui’s potential exit as a ‘sad turn of events’.

‘What a sad turn of events with Lopetegui and Wolves,’ Balague tweeted.

‘With the club unable to get the signings/investment they promised him and instead having to sell to keep up with FFP, his future is in doubt even though he is under contract.

‘Talks this week between club and him will get us a clearer picture.’

After Wolves’ Premier League survival was confirmed, Lopetegui issued a rallying cry that the club needed to ‘go again’ in the transfer market so they could build on their survival.

‘We have to improve and take advantage of the summer,’ said the former Spain boss. ‘If not, we know the level of the Premier League. We want to improve, we need to improve.

‘We have to be together in the same way, we want to improve. In football, you have to want to increase your performance and squad. This is about investment too.

‘This year has been a very hard year for all, maybe it can serve as a lesson for all of us.’

Lopetegui still has two years left on his current Wolves deal and the threat of no investment could see Wolves become the next Premier League club to part ways with their manager.

Wolves spent around £100million last summer while Lage was in charge and then a further £75m in January to help Lopetegui get the club back on track.

Any money coming in is likely to come from player departures, with the likes of Ruben Neves, Matheus Nunes and Goncalo Guedes all being linked with the exit.
