DCI Darren George said: ‘A 49-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and at this time we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this matter.

‘We are keen that anyone with information comes forward and we are particularly keen to speak to anyone who was in the Carlton Terrace area of Swansea between 8pm yesterday and 4am this morning.

‘I would like to thank the local community for their patience during significant police activity in the area.’

The leafy suburban road where Ms Lodwig’s body was found had been cordoned off while police searched for the killer.

A neighbour said: ‘It’s quite frightening – there are armed police here and a killer is at large. He could be laying low, hiding in a shed, or in bushes. The police helicopter has been buzzing overhead all day looking for the suspect.’

Friends have taken to Facebook to pay tribute to the 22-year-old.

Sophie Rees posted: ‘So shocked this morning. Rip Sammy Lee Lodwig. You were hell of a girl fair play! Always made me laugh in town chasing Rocky around the place! Didn’t deserve that at all!! You were a Beautiful soul inside and out. Rest in peace!’

A friend, who didn’t want to be named, said: ‘She was larger than life, fun-loving and a bit of a party girl.’

Chanelle Jones posted a message saying: ‘Such a young beautiful girl! RIP. Gone but not forgotten. Such a cruel world.’

Earlier today Brian Davies, 64, who lives nearby said the police had been stopping people going in and out of the street but hadn’t been saying why.

‘Police cars are slowly patrolling neighbouring streets, they are looking for someone over what’s happened to the poor girl.

‘It’s a fairly quiet street but it does attract a few unsavoury types. I just feel sorry for the poor girl and her family.’

A neighbour who asked not to be named said: ‘Apparently she was stabbed. It’s horrible to think people are using knives around here. No one deserves to die like that.’

This morning a police spokeswoman said: ‘Officers were called at approximately 3.10am today following reports of a serious assault in which a 22-year-old woman died.

‘Armed officers have been deployed alongside divisional units and the police helicopter, and a number of cordons are in place in the area while investigations continue.

‘Anyone with information about the incident, who has not yet spoken to police, is asked to contact 101, quoting occurrence 1900144514.’
