Woman, 22, is stabbed to death and a man, 77, is injured

A 23-year-old man stabbed to death a 22-year-old woman inside Winchester Public Library in Massachusetts on Saturday.

The man, who has been identified as Jeffrey Yao of Winchester, also stabbed a 77-year-old man after he attempted to save the woman.

According to police she was stabbed multiple times in the head and upper torso area with a 10-inch blade hunting knife, the Boston Globe reported.

People at the library were able to of the library were able to keep the man in the library until police responded and took him into custody.

The woman, whose name has not been released yet as police wait to notify her next of kin, was immediately taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The elderly man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive. 

Yao is facing a murder charge and an assault with intent to murder charge.

According to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan witnesses say Yao was yelling incoherently after the double stabbing.

A motive for the fatal stabbing is unknown at this time, however Yao is expected to be arraigned Monday at Woburn District Court.

Ryan said ‘The preliminary investigation suggests that the female victim was seated at a table in the library when the suspect approached her, unprovoked, stabbing her multiple times.’

‘The male victim was stabbed in the arm while attempting to intervene.’

At this time the library has been closed off until further notice.

A former classmate of Yao’s tweeted ‘Horrible news. I went to High School with this person and sat near him in AP Economics.’

‘I’m not exaggerating when I say he didn’t shower for six months straight. He exhibited plenty of mental health issues, but clearly nothing was done about it.’
