The woman allegedly strangled by a man before he took her young child last weekend has died in hospital, with the man’s charges upgraded to murder.

Queensland Police confirmed this morning that the 25-year woman passed away in Gold Coast University Hospital following the attack.

She had been in a coma since being found unconscious at an apartment in Southport on the Gold Coast last Saturday night.

A 34-year-old man is alleged to have assaulted the woman before taking her 11-month-old child.

The man, from Creastmead, had now had his charges upgraded to murder. He will appear in the Richlands Magistrates Court today.

Police issued an ‘amber alert’ on Saturday before the child was later found unharmed taken to Crestmead Police Station.

The man was arrested at a storage centre in Oxley shortly after 12.30am on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to the Como Crescent home at about 5pm after neighbours complained of a disturbance.

Officers arrived to find the 25-year-old woman unresponsive. She was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

They will allege the man strangled the woman before taking the young child with him.

A grey Mazda CX9 was seized by police and they are currently examining the vehicle as part of their investigations.

Yesterday a family member of the young woman spoke to reporters.

‘She wanted no relationship with him, he wanted a relationship with her,’ a man told reporters outside of Richlands court yesterday.

‘We literally buried her mother two days before this. He was there, shoveling dirt into the grave, carrying the coffin.

‘Her poor soon is laying there waiting for his mother to come back, it’s not fair.’

The man said members of the woman’s family were attempting to travel to Australia from New Zealand despite Covid restrictions.
