Police in Florida have arrested a woman who they say was spotted stealing approximately $4,000 worth of orchids that residents of a neighborhood planted.

Katrina Marie Brady, 34, was detained on Wednesday and charged with several counts of grand theft for ‘stealing orchids that residents had placed on trees growing in the swale,’ Sgt. Tomas Salcedo with the Coral Gables Police Department said in a report, the Miami Herald reports.

Salcedo approximated the value of the purple and white orchids at $4,000.

According to police, Brady was seen on surveillance video pulling the flowers off the trees on both June 4 and June 19.

The trees had lined the 1800-2000 blocks of Country Club Prado, a lush residential neighborhood.

Brady was transferred to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional.

Video shared on Facebook shows a woman approaching trees that and pulling orchids off of them. The woman can be seen smoking as she steals the flowers.

Around two to three years ago, mosaic artist Ray Corral and Alina Melidena moved into the area and started placing the orchids in the towering oak trees that lined the sidewalk.

Their neighbor, Carl Kafka, said that the scenic flower soon motivated others to post them in their own trees.

‘Ray wanted to put in orchids for the good of all the neighbors,’ said Kafka.

‘They are so beautiful — especially in the pandemic, when we are all using our street so often. For someone to do that.’

Last month, Corral told WSVN that the neighborhood spent $2,000 replacing the flowers.
