A 47-year-old woman has suffered serious injuries after a corrosive substance was thrown in her face today in Birmingham, West Midlands Police said.

Officers say someone on moped or a bicycle threw the substance at the woman in the Ladywood area of the city.

It is understood that West Midlands Police are treating the matter as a targeted attack.

After the attack the victim is understood to have made her way to a road in the Smethwick area – about two miles away – before an ambulance was called.

It comes just days after a three-year-old was doused in a corrosive substance while shopping with his mother at a Home Bargains in Worcestor.

Today MailOnline revealed the father of the boy is being questioned over the attack. The 39-year-old suspect, who has not been named, was the first suspect detectives held after the boy was targeted on Saturday.

Three other younger men are also being grilled in connection with Saturday afternoon’s horrific attack after they were arrested 130 miles away in Walthamstow, east London.

Today a fifth man, 41, from Wolverhampton, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

West Midlands Police recorded 57 crimes in the past three years in which acid, hot water or cigarettes were used as weapons, the news site revealed in an investigation.

Almost half of the offences recorded took place in Birmingham. During the period at least 1,300 crimes involving harmful chemicals took place across the UK.
