Woman, 55, dies after a ‘hit and run involving a taxi driver’ in Darwin

A female pedestrian was killed in an alleged hit and run involving a taxi on Thursday.

The unidentified woman, 55, was struck on Smith Street in Darwin’s CBD just after midnight, police said.

She suffered a cardiac arrest at the scene as the result of her ‘traumatic and severe injuries’ and couldn’t be revived, despite desperate attempts by paramedics.

The area remained a crime scene until late Wednesday morning, with the closure of Smith Street between Lindsay and McLachlan streets.

Police allege the driver did not stop but the passenger inside the cab later called officers for help.

Police later identified the taxi driver, 64, allegedly involved in the incident at the airport and arrested him.

‘The taxi has been seized for forensic testing,’ a Northern Territory Police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia.

‘The taxi driver is assisting police with their inquiries, as is the passenger.’

No charges have yet been laid.

‘The matter is still under investigation but at this stage it seems that the taxi was travelling north from Daly Street when he struck the woman,’ Sergeant Mark Casey from NT Police’s major crash investigation unit told reporters.
