A Maine woman has pleaded guilty to manslaughter after a home invasion victim was literally scared to death.
Belfast officials say 37-year-old Tara Shibles pleaded guilty in a deal with the state for a 10-month jail sentence. WABI-TV reports Shibles apologized in court Monday, saying she never meant to hurt anyone.
According to police, Shibles broke into the home of 72-year-old Joyce Wood in April and jumped into bed with her.
Wood called 911 and ran out of the house before suffering a fatal heart attack.
She suffered from coronary artery disease and died of shock during the incident that took place in April, according to the Maine medical examiner’s office.
Wood called 911 between 3am and 4am on April 2 after Shibles climbed into bed with her and refused to let her turn on the light, according to the Morning Sentinel.
The woman’s family members arrived before police and placed her in a car, where she died.

Police called the case and circumstances ‘bizarre’ as they investigated what happened that night.
Neighbors remembered Wood as an ‘outspoken and blunt’ woman. Ernie Glabau, who lived nearby said Wood was ‘one of the best neighbors I’ve ever had’.

‘You always knew where her feet were and where she stood and what she had to say,’ he told the Sentinel.
Wood had a daughter and three grandchildren.
Shibles is due to start her sentence immediately.
