Woman arrested at Kmart and charged with Melbourne child abduction

A woman has been charged with child abduction after a five-year-old boy was allegedly taken from his mother’s parked car in Melbourne.

The boy was inside his mum’s car, which was parked in a driveway in Preston, north of Melbourne, at 8.30am when a woman approached the vehicle.

Police say the woman, who did not know the child or the family, allegedly grabbed the boy and walked away.

The mother, who had only left the car for a matter of moments, chased after the woman and took back her son.

Police later arrested a 33-year-old woman outside a shopping centre on Plenty Road in Preston.

She has been charged with kidnapping, child stealing and common assault and will face Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday evening.
