Woman claims her mother-in-law fat-shamed her with insensitive Christmas gift

Would YOU be offended by this gift? Woman who’s put on weight is given a ‘joke’ cushion by her mother-in-law with the slogan: ‘I gave up jogging because my thighs rub together’

  • The anonymous woman took to Mumsnet to accuse her in-law of fat-shaming her
  • A photo of the present showed a check cushion emblazoned with a ‘vulgar joke’
  • It suggested the UK woman no longer jogs because her thighs rubbed together

It’s likely everyone’s had a Christmas gift they wish they could return, or at least exchange – but one woman was left more outraged than most with one of her presents.

The anonymous woman took to the UK parenting site Mumsnet to accuse her mother-in-law of fat-shaming her with an insensitive gift.

A photograph of the present showed a check cushion emblazoned with a ‘vulgar joke’ which suggested the woman no longer jogs because her thighs rubbed together and her ‘knickers caught fire’.

Taking to the comment section, people were quick to tell the woman to ‘bin’ the ‘mean and nasty’ gift, or donate it to a charity shop.

Posting to Mumsnet on Boxing Day, the woman asked: ‘Is this present having a dig at me?’

‘Don’t really see partner’s mother since Covid as she lives a couple of hours away and she never travels. Previously it was small talk every few months.

‘She came for Christmas lunch and this was my present. Am I being unreasonable in thinking she is fat-shaming me?

‘When ever she sees her slightly overweight son she makes comments about how he looks pregnant. I used to run a lot. I don’t now.’

In a later post, the woman admitted: ‘I am overweight, I did use to run a lot but stopped a few years ago. Put cushion in bin, don’t think I will see her for a while as can’t be bothered… she’s just rude.’

Commenters rushed to assure the woman that she was not being unreasonable and suggested she throw the present away.

One person wrote: ‘I wouldn’t have something like that in the house, it’s incredibly vulgar and a mean gift.’

Another said: ‘Like anyone would appreciate that! Does she have inappropriate stuff like that around her house? If not I would discreetly take it next time you visit and just leave it on her sofa.’

A third added: ‘I would say from what you have said that this is an insensitive gift, her intentions may or may not have been good, but unless it was some kind of inside joke or something, OP you’re not being unreasonable at all.’

A fourth wrote: ‘Yeah she’s being rude! That would be going straight to the charity shop!’

However, some said they believed the cushion was supposed to be taken lightly, as a joke, and didn’t believe the mother-in-law was fat-shaming her daughter-in-law.

One person insisted: ‘Sorry but that’s hilarious! Not everything is personal, you know?

Another said: ‘Maybe she thought it was funny, if you used to jog and no longer does. Have you ever had a conversation about jogging causing your thighs to rub together? I don’t think she’s fat-shaming but it is a strange present.’
