Woman clamor for Amazon to bring back Good Girls Revolt

Women are clamoring for Amazon to bring back an empowering show about sexual harassment in the workplace, after it was canceled by its ousted exec Roy Price—whose career toppled after he was accused of that same misconduct.

Good Girls Revolt, a now-defunct series, aired for just one season between 2015 and 2016. It features four women working at a magazine in New York City in the 1960s, and their fight to be treated with the same respect as men, as well as being payed equally.

The show, which is based on a real-life lawsuit filed in 1970 by 46 women accusing Newsweek if gender discrimination, was canceled in what appeared to be a surprise decision occurring despite good numbers and positive audience ratings.

Price was suspended by Amazon, then resigned, last week after being accused of sexual harassment by producer Isa Hackett, whose work includes the Amazon-made Philip K. Dick adaptation The Man in the High Castle.

His resignation occurred not long after women accused Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment and, in some cases, rape. The Weinstein scandal, which has now seen more than 50 women speak out against the producer, has shed light on rampant abuse in the entertainment industry.

Creator Dana Calvo specifically accused Price at the time of axing the show because he didn’t care about it. Price was the head of Amazon Studios, the online giant’s branch that develops shows among other works.

‘What we hadn’t factored in is that [Amazon Studios head] Roy Price just doesn’t care for the show,’ Calvo told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. ‘He’s representative of the Amazon culture in that he’s just impenetrable.’

She further blasted the now-disgraced exec, adding: ‘All I know is that in the [season two] pitch, he asked us to refer to the characters by the actors’ names because he didn’t know the characters’ names.’

Calvo also publicly said on Twitter that no women were involved in the decision, and said the cancellation was the result of Price’s work only.

With Price’s ousting, fans of Good Girls Revolt are now seeing an opportunity to bring their beloved show back for the second season is has for now never had.

Anna Camp, who plays journalist Jane Hollander on the series, spoke out against Price earlier this month on Twitter, writing: ‘He cancelled #goodgirlsrevolt a show about sexual discrimination and harassment in the workplace.’

The actress later added: ‘Go get em #goodgirlsrevolt fans!’

Camp, 35, has previously revealed she has been sexually harassed and discriminated against during her career, and has told Business Insider she was called inappropriate names on the set of Good Girls Revolt.

‘It blew my mind. Sexual harassment is prevalent in our industry,” Camp told the website last year. ‘I was telling people earlier that we get all dolled up for the show, right? Especially my character, to the nines with the hair, and I go over to [craft services] and I’m eating food and I’ve never been called “doll”, “honey”, and “sweetie” more than when I’m on this show.’

In addition to Camp, dozens of supporters have taken to social media to demand that Good Girls Revolt be brought back.

‘Hey @jeffbezos,’ someone told the Amazon CEO, ‘maybe a guy accused of sexual harrasment shouldn’t be making the call to cancel a show about sexual harassment? Bring back #goodgirlsrevolt.’

Someone else tweeted: ‘Put women in the room. Give them power create. Support them when they do. #Goodgirlsrevolt is beautiful & deserved better from Amazon.’

In light of a news cycle that has seen thousands of women share stories of harassment and assault by joining the #MeToo campaign, others pointed out that the show’s theme are more relevant than ever.

‘#Goodgirlsrevolt was an important look back in history. Today, women are still fighting for fair, respectful treatment,’ someone wrote. ‘Bring it back!!’
