Woman desperate to resign as maid of honour as bridezilla recruits 18 bridesmaids

A maid of honour has confessed that she is desperate to resign from her role at her friend’s wedding because she’s turned into a bridezilla.

A woman going by the username ‘MaidofHorror’ on Mumsnet, complained that after initially feeling pleased to be asked, as time has gone on additional costs have mounted and she no longer wants to be a part of her friend’s big day.

Along with 18 bridesmaids, the maid of honour has been asked to chip in to pay for the wedding cake as well as a hen do abroad.

Worried she will look selfish, the user asked fellow Mumsnet users to help make a decision to quit, with many encouraging her to step aside and leave the ‘bridezilla’ to it.

A step too far! A woman who wants 18 bridesmaids at her wedding might be at risk of losing her maid of honour thanks to some extreme demands

One Mumsnet user agreed that she should jump ship, saying: ‘Jesus. This is a Bridezilla in the making. Run for the hills!’

‘Tell her to sod right off! You’re not subsidising her wedding! Pull out with dignity now,’ said another.

Another joked: ‘Dear oh dear! I’d imagine the groom will be running for the hills before long, so that should solve your problem quite nicely tbh!

‘She needs talking down, she has wedding fever!’

But others suggested that she should consult with the bride directly to avoid miscommunication: ‘I’d personally take the opportunity to talk to her directly, one to one, about what you’ve been told, and actually get her to either confirm or debunk the stories. After that, you can make a decision.’

‘How much of what you’ve been asked does the bride even know about though? 18 bridesmaids is clearly mad but please give her an indication of what’s going on she might be totally oblivious,’ suggested another.

MaidofHorror revealed that she had ‘happily said yes’ when her ‘very close friend’ originally asked her to be her maid of honour.

The bride had reassured her that the wedding would be a small event, and that she she was expecting ‘nothing big, just a fun night out’ for her hen do, and that she would pay for the bridesmaid dress.

However, things changed quickly, with the bride increasing her bridesmaid count to 18 and realising how much it would cost for her the bride has asked them to pay for their own dresses.

MaidofHorror said that the other bridesmaids are expecting to pay for a hen do abroad, as well as beauty treatments for the bride during the week of her wedding.

With the wedding not for another 18 months, she explained that she wouldn’t be leaving the bride ‘in the lurch’ but was worried it would ruin their friendship if she resigned.

She said: ‘I know I probably sound really selfish but I was told this was to be a small wedding and a low key hen night. The way it is snowballing just says to me that it will only get worse the closer it gets.’
