A female jogger has died after being crushed by a falling tree in Melbourne.

The large elm tree fell in Princes Park in Parkville about 8.30 on Monday morning.

The woman, believed to be aged in her 30s, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Royal Melbourne hospital in a critical condition where she died shortly after.

Paramedics from Ambulance Victoria and two firefighters along with a command unit from the Melbourne Fire Brigade attended the scene within five minutes of reports a woman was trapped.

A statement from Victoria Police read: ‘Police will prepare a report for the coroner after a woman was struck by a tree in Parkville this morning (12 August).’

‘It is understood she was located with critical injuries about 8.30am and transported to hospital where she later died. No one else was injured during the incident.

‘Road closures are currently in place at the southbound lane of Royal Parade near Walker Street and police are asking motorists and cyclists to avoid the area.’

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Pictures from the scene shows the enormous tree completely uprooted as it lay across the footpath, commonly crossed by joggers and walkers.

The incident comes after a polar blast swept areas of Victoria, bringing strong winds.

According to a Weatherzone spokesman, winds reached up to 52 km/h over the weekend and could’ve ‘weakened’ the structure of the tree.
