Two women riding an escalator were injured after a suitcase came tumbling down the stairway and knocked them over in south China.  

The suitcase belonged to commuter Ms Guo, who had failed to hold on to her luggage after hauling it onto the escalator at Nanning city’s Fengling Metro Station.

One of the two injured women was taken to hospital due to serious injuries.

Heart-stopping footage of the incident on Saturday shows Ms Guo taking the downward escalator near the station’s entrance with her large pink suitcase at about 8am.

However, she released her grip on the luggage to adjust the strap of her backpack. 

The large case then came rolling down the escalator and one man can be seen running down the staircase to avoid being hit. He was unhurt. 

However, the large luggage wiped out two other commuters – one of them was seen sprawled on the escalator after being knocked over.

The other women – filmed hurrying down the escalator – could not escape in time and was violently hit by the suitcase.

She fell on to the ground at the bottom of the stairway and station workers immediately activated the emergency stop switch.

Ms Guo has agreed to compensate the injured woman a total of 2,000 yuan (£225) for her medical bill.

The police has warned the public against travelling on escalators with large suitcases and said they should use the lift instead to avoid similar accidents.
