Woman leaps to death from 12th floor of NYC hotel

A woman leaped to her death from a New York City hotel about 120 feet above ground on Tuesday.

The woman jumped out of a window about 12 stories high at 1 Hotel Central Park on Sixth Avenue and West 58th Street in midtown Manhattan, according to the New York Daily News.

Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 2:19pm.

Firefighters and police tried to persuade the woman to come off the ledge and back inside the hotel, but to no avail.

The woman jumped just before 3:00pm.

‘I was coming out of the building and saw people looking up. There were firemen there trying to talk her out of jumping,’ said a witness, David Horowitch.

‘It almost looked like she slipped. Not sure if that’s what happened. She somersaulted. It was a sound I never want to hear again.

‘Then I looked away.’

Another witness, New York University student Brendan Walsh, told the Daily News that police spoke to the woman briefly before she jumped.

‘She came over the edge. One officer came. You could see his head. He talked to her for maybe one minute,’ he said.

‘She just let go, fell backwards. From the beginning she was just a hair away from falling. It looked like she was ready to go. She was just getting ready, in the position.

‘It wasn’t one of those situations where someone is sitting on the bridge and wants to talk.’  

The hotel from which she jumped is a pricey one.
