Woman on bail for assault allowed to go on holiday to Lanzarote

  • Donna Cottrell pleaded not guilty to grievous bodily harm and dangerous driving
  • 30-year-old from Hull, Yorks, was placed on curfew until her trial later this year
  • But she has managed to appeal conditions so she can go on holiday to Spain

A woman accused of a serious assault and dangerous driving has managed to convince a judge to let her go on holiday while she awaits her trial.

Donna Cottrell, 30, is facing a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent and dangerous driving after an incident last month.

Cottrell has pleaded not guilty to the charges and was placed on a police-monitored curfew until her trial later this year.

But her solicitor persuaded a judge at Hull Crown Court yesterday to relax Cottrell’s bail conditions to allow her seven days in the sun.

Mr Thompson told Judge David Tremberg: ‘Evidence could be provided of the booking of the holiday and the fact it was booked prior to this incident.

‘The defendant would say there’s no risk of her going and not coming back.’

Stephen Robinson, prosecuting, said: ‘The bail conditions were imposed to prevent further offences rather than fail to surrender – that doesn’t seem to be the risk here.’

Judge Tremberg relaxed Cottrell’s bail terms so she could go on holiday, but warned her: ‘One thing you must understand and be absolutely clear about; if you don’t turn up for your trial you will be committing a separate offence for which you could be punished, and the trial can go ahead in your absence and probably will do.’

Before leaving the dock, Cottrell said: ‘Thank you, your honour.’
