Woman ordered to remove ‘Toot for Trump’ sign from yard

A Florida woman was ordered to remove a pro-Donald Trump poster from her property after receiving a code violation.

The homemade sign stands in the backyard of Elaine Simmons, 72, of Minneola, and reads ‘Toot For Trump’ as well as ‘Proud to be an American’ and ‘We stand for the national anthem’.

Simmons said she put the sign up back when Trump was a candidate in November 2016 but that she didn’t receive any complaints until it was edited to add the latter two slogans.

‘To me, if you can’t stand for the national anthem and represent the flag for which your veterans have given you freedom, then you need to buy a one-way ticket to somewhere,’ Simmons told Fox 35 Orlando.

Simmons said that after she posted a photo of her sign on Facebook, the county received a complaint and issued her a code violation notice.

‘No one complained about it until after I put up…that “we stand for the national anthem”,’ she said.

Simmons received a letter from the Lake County government on October 9 informing her that the sign was a violation because it’s been up for almost a year, not because of the messages on it.

Simmons's sign was vandalized with the words 'Grab in by the p***y' in reference to words that Trump was revealed to have said in a 2005 recording

‘Our code does not permit a temporary sign such as this to be in place for more than 90 days,’ a Lake County representative told News 6. ‘We are aware that this sign has been up since at least November 2016.’

Days later, Simmons’s sign was vandalized with the words ‘Grab in by the p***y’ in reference to words that Trump was revealed to have said in a 2005 recording.

The couple was told they have 14 days to comply with the ordinance or risk being fined. The Simmons’ are still unsure what their next step will be.

Simmons referred to the ordeal as a ‘live and learn moment’ but told Fox 35 that the fact she had to remove her sign is ‘really, really sad’.
