A 21-year-old marketing assistant from Melbourne has revealed how she ran an entire half marathon in her hotel room while stuck in quarantine after she flew home from London during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mikaela Gill arrived at the Pan Pacific hotel in Melbourne on May 15, where she has been isolating for the past 10 days until two weeks has elapsed and she can go home to her family.

As a fitness fanatic, it wasn’t long before Mikaela dreamed up a new kind of fitness challenge: a half marathon or 21.1 kilometres run backwards and forwards in her hotel room.

The 21-year-old completed her half marathon in three hours and one minute, describing the experience as ‘dizzying but doable’.

‘I was on a Working Holiday visa in London when the coroanvirus pandemic began and continued to get worse,’ Mikaela told FEMAIL.

‘I decided to come home towards the end of April and booked a flight for May, arriving on 15 May at about midnight, where I was immediately taken to the Pan Pacific to isolate for 14 days.’

Mikaela said she is hugely into her fitness and spent the first week in quarantine doing ‘lots of yoga and at-home HIIT workouts’.

But the 21-year-old also likes to challenge herself and has an Instagram account where she carries out different fitness challenges.

‘I decided I wanted to test myself, and while I’m not a runner, I thought a half marathon would be a good distance to run to get rid of some of the energy I had built up in isolation,’ she said.

‘This was more than a challenge though, as I was literally running up and back a 10-metre strip!’

Mikaela carried out her half marathon over the weekend, running backwards and forwards in her room and occasionally into the bathroom to ‘mix up the route’.

‘I didn’t stop throughout, but it did take me a while because I had to change my sports bra halfway through and I also got a groceries delivery from security unexpectedly so I had to quickly do runs and unpack all of the cold stuff into the fridge while I was running!’ she said.

‘It definitely wasn’t the quickest half marathon I could have run, but I did not stop running for the entire duration.’

‘This is amazing! I’m in the hotel and just miss running five kilometres,’ one woman posted.

‘Wow, that is incredible – go you,’ another added.

Others said they are keen to try this out, as after seven days of pacing up and down their hotel room, they have only amassed half a kilometre.

‘I can promise you it feels so good to get moving and get rid of some energy!’ Mikaela added.
