Woman shares her dating rules, from always going out on a Thursday and never becoming a ‘pen pal’

A writer has gone viral with a hilarious video outlining her 15 rules for a successful first date.

Eli Rallo, a New York content creator with 550,000 followers, shares her tips, from what to wear to the best day of the week to meet.

Eli, who posts under the handle @thejarr, has become a social media hit thanks to her light-hearted clips offering advice to women.

In the latest video, she says the first – and possibly most important – tip is to have your first date on a Thursday.

She says: ‘The most elite first-date day is Thursday. Why? On a Thursday you can say to someone what are your plans for Saturday? And then you can go out with them on the Saturday or get Sunday brunch.

‘It’s the perfect closeness to a weekend where you can make plans for a second date before Monday, and then you know how you feel about them before the new week starts.’

She also advises on how to prepare for a date, by drinking 1.5 glasses of something – be it red wine or diet Coke to get yourself ‘pumped up’.

She adds: ‘While you are doing this, you have to listen to Ariana Grande. It just makes you feel good before you go on a date.’

She adds: ‘Rule number 4 is that you do not need to be texting a person all day every day before you go on a first date.

Rules for a first date

1. It’s a Thursday

2. 1.5 glasses pregame rule

3. The Ariana Grande rule

4. Don’t become a pen pal

5. Date on the same night as friends

6. Drinks are king

7. Canadian tux v cute sweater

8. Don’t add to contacts

9. Use manipulative psychology

10. Tell one comedic traumatic story

11. Share food

12. Don’t text first

13. Talk about top five favourite albums

14. Follow the thumbs-up rule

15. Make tentative plans for after

‘You don’t know them. Don’t become a pen pal. You want to get to know them in person not over the phone.’

Another bit of advice she offers is to plan your first date on the same night as your other single friends.

She said: ‘All of you are going to get together. All of you are going to pre-game together. All of you are going to get ready together, then you are are all going to go on a first date and then you are going to come home and regroup. It’s really fun.’

She says: ‘For a first date, having a beverage is king because then you can hold something and you have something to do.’

She adds that even if you don’t want to go out for drinks, go out for coffee so you ‘have something to sip on so it makes you feel more comfortable’.

She also advises to wear a Canadian tuxedo in Spring or Summer, but in cooler months to wear an ‘F-me sweater’ – something that screams confidence but is also ‘soft and huggable’.

Another key rule is to not add the person you are meeting into your phone contacts until the third date.

She says: ‘They do not need to take up real estate in your phone contacts until the third date.’

In a slightly peculiar tip, she also says that straight men fall in love with a woman when they have the time to think about them.

She says: ‘Straight men fall in love in the time they can think about you subconsciously.

‘So have an incredible first date and then leave. Give him the time to think about you and fall in love with you.’

Eli forgot rule number 8, so there are actually 15 rules

The hilarious rules sparked a strong reaction

The writer frequently compiles lists of rules for her 550,000 followers. She has rules for everyday of the week as well as on how best to date and how to get out of a funk

But she warns that if your first date is with a woman, this won’t work as woman fall in love through sex and intimacy.

She adds that you should tell at least one comedic traumatic story during the date – to show your potential partner what’s coming.

And she says that you should make ‘tentative’ plans with your friends for after, so you have somewhere to go if you don’t want to stick around.

The post has been played 1.7million times, with many approving of the list of tips.

One follower wrote: ‘Thursday is also perfect because if it’s going bad you can use the “gotta get up early for work” excuse.’

Another wrote: ‘I like the idea of going for dates on the same night as your friends. That sounds fun.’

A third wrote: ‘This is an iconic rules list. Wow.’

Writer Eli often shares ‘rules’ on her social media sites. She has previously shared rules for the dating website Hinge; which include not wearing sunglasses in photographs or trying to appear to be someone else cooler than you are.

She has also shared rules for a Monday, which include being up at 7am and making a glittery todo list that you are more inclined to complete.

And her list of ‘How to get out of a Funk’ includes making your bed, tidying at least three things away and going for a walk.
