This 42-year-old woman who was in a vegetative state for a month after being assaulted reportedly woke up to breastfeed her youngest daughter who was asking to be fed.

The incident took place in the city of San Francisco, in the northern Argentina province of Cordoba, when mother Maria Laura Ferreyra woke up after spending 30 days in a vegetative state.

Doctors told the family that Ferreyra was at risk of suffering brain death and even suggested to them that they donate her organs.

Martin Delgado, her husband, said that those words ‘were very hard’ for everybody but says he had faith in the fact that everything was going to be fine, and that his wife was going to wake up.

Fifteen days later a medical test showed that the mother of their three children had neurological activity but she was not awake.

Last weekend, the youngest daughter of the couple went to visit her to the hospital, sat down by her and made the noise she tended to make when she was hungry.

The woman then pulled down her gown and started to breastfeed her.

The husband said: ‘It was a magical, unique moment. We all cried. Seeing how they hugged each other, that motherly instinct, it was amazing.’

Local media reported that even if Ferreyra is not yet conscious, her husband claims that she recognised the daughter and even saw her touching the girl like she used to do before going into the coma.

Local media reported that the couple have three children, aged 17, 13 and two years old.

Prosecutor Leonor Failla is in charge of the investigation into the assault, which is ongoing.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of being linked with the assault, but the investigation is still ongoing.

Delgado said ‘what we hope is justice is done, for the three kids who are waiting for her and are suffering a lot’.
