A Tennessee woman who told police she was robbed while out jogging was arrested on Tuesday after investigators say she fabricated the story and had actually been out drinking at the time of the alleged attack.

Rose Pauls, 31, claimed to police that she was running down Nat Hoosier Lane, in Clarksville, during the evening of April 2, when two assailants sprung out from the darkness and robbed her.

She told officers she was grabbed by a man and woman who ‘punched her and demanded everything she had,’ including her jewelry, before fleeing the scene in a car.

Pauls waited until the next day to report the attack, authorities said, after she allegedly got treatment for ‘injuries to her face and arms’.

Pauls report was said to have sparked panic among members of the local community, according to the Clarksville Police Department, who say they were inundated with messages from ‘deeply disturbed’ residents concerned such an attack could happen in their neighborhood.

Investigators say they worked for several days and countless hours trying to identify the suspects described by Pauls, but continuously drew a blank.

However a breakthrough finally came when Detective Neagos – corroborating eyewitness testimony and anonymous tips from Crimestoppers – determined that Pauls hadn’t been out jogging that night as claimed, but had actually been drinking in a nearby bar, police say.

Officers from Clarksville PD believe that Neagos’ investigation completely ‘debunks’ Pauls’ story, insisting the whole ordeal was entirely ‘fabricated’ by the 31-year-old.

The alleged incident was reported to have happened down Nat Hoosier Lane, at 9pm. Police instead believe Pauls was drinking in a bar

A spokesperson for the department declined to speculate what they believe the suspect’s motive is for allegedly inventing the attack, when questioned by DailyMail.com.

The spokesperson also declined to comment whether Pauls had actually been assaulted or robbed during their believed version of events.

She currently remains in custody at the Montgomery County Jail and has been charged with filing a false police report.

Pauls’ bond is currently set at $5,000.
