A woman has been found dead in a park in Melbourne. 

The body was discovered in Avondale Heights in Melbourne’s northwest at about 5.45pm on Thursday evening.

The woman is yet to be identified and the cause of death is unclear.

Police said in a statement they are investigating the scene at an address on North Road in Avondale Heights.

The crime scene is at the end of a walking track behind a number of aged care centres, near the Maribyrnong River.

A neighbour told The Age the walking track was popular in the mornings and evenings.

The entrance to the Doutta Galla aged care centre has been closed, but relatives of the residents are still able to come and go.

Homicide has not been called at this stage. 

Investigators are awaiting the postmortem results.
