Dog theft is rarely treated as a criminal offence in Vietnam, unless the stolen animals are valued at more than two million VND (£63).

Animal lovers in the country – where an estimated five million dogs are eaten a year – have long called for a crackdown.

Many of the stolen dogs are believed to be pets which are sold to small, unregulated abattoirs and brutally killed.
