Woman’s Hour host chides her ex Adrian Chiles in BBC pay row

The gender pay-gap row, which has pitted broadcasting colleagues against each other, has now become even more personal.

I can disclose that Radio 4 Woman’s Hour host Jane Garvey has accused her ex-husband and fellow BBC presenter, Adrian Chiles, of failing to speak out over equal pay. Adding insult to injury, she suggests that Chiles let down their two daughters.

The pair split amid rumours Chiles was more than ‘just good friends’ with Bleakley — which they always denied — and divorced in 2009

‘I have talked to him about it,’ says Garvey. ‘I feel that some of the men at the BBC could have done a lot more to help.’

Chiles was the highly paid co-presenter of BBC’s The One Show with Christine Bleakley until the pair were poached by ITV in a multi-million-pound move to host ill-fated breakfast show Daybreak.

‘Adrian has got two daughters, so I know he would hate to be thought of as someone who didn’t understand the complexities of all this and wasn’t onside,’ Garvey says.

‘But it would have been really good if some of the high-profile male presenters at the BBC had actually pitched in and said, “We back you and we get this”.’

Speaking on a podcast, she adds: ‘But, if you’re a white man in Britain, how much can you ever hope to understand about the challenges of being a white woman, never mind a woman of colour or a disabled person? I just don’t think they can be expected to get it.’

There appears to be little love lost between Chiles and Garvey. When she was asked last year if she still gets called Mrs Chiles, she complained: ‘Every single year I get a Christmas card using that title and I don’t know who it’s from because I tear it into a million pieces.’

The pair split amid rumours Chiles was more than ‘just good friends’ with Bleakley — which they always denied — and divorced in 2009.

Bleakley went on to marry former England footballer Frank Lampard.

Georgia May Jagger steps out with her stepsisters

Sir Mick Jagger’s daughter Georgia May is embracing her ever expanding family.

Sporting a Chanel dress and jacket, the 27-year-old, whose mother Jerry Hall wed media mogul Rupert Murdoch three years ago, attended a party in New York this week with step-sisters, Chloe, 16, and Grace, 18.

Their mother, businesswoman Wendi Deng, amicably divorced Rupert in 2013 after 14 years of marriage. Georgia recently moved to New York to live with her boyfriend, restaurateur Louis Levy, 29. ‘I’m really happy that I see him more,’ she said. ‘I used to be like an old lady and go to bed really early.

‘But because my boyfriend works nights, the dogs and I are up until two in the morning pretty much every night.’

Don’t ask Belfast-born singer Sir Van Morrison for his views on Brexit. Quizzed on whether he concerns himself with the issue of the backstop in Northern Ireland, the prickly singer’s response is typically curt. ‘Not really. That’s their job to get on with it. My job is making music, writing songs and singing.’

Spandau Ballet star Martin Kemp has paternal advice to his son Roman — a contestant in the latest series of I’m A Celebrity.

‘I’d tell him avoid getting in cliques because I’ve done a few of those shows and the way to do it is to spread the love,’ he tells me.

‘Anybody I’ve spoken to who has done that show says they’ve had the best time you could ever imagine. I’m a huge fan of those big shows and taking part in them.

‘The best thing about being in entertainment is you never know what’s around the corner.’ Maggots and cockroaches usually.

Shocking truth of ‘Kes’ caning scene

Left-wing film director Ken Loach has revealed one regret from his long and distinguished career.

‘I remember feeling a little bad about a caning scene in Kes,’ he says of the 1969 drama. ‘There’s a part where a little boy gets the cane because some other boys have made him hide their cigarettes.

‘We didn’t tell the boy he would be caned, because it would have taken the shock away.

‘A little tear escaped from his eye.

‘But he got double payment, so he was laughing all the way to the piggy bank.’

Model-turned-pub landlady Jodie Kidd has scaled new heights to raise money for charity.

‘I’ve just returned from Peru, walking the Inca trail to raise money for our local hospice, Chestnut Tree House,’ she tells me of her jaunt with boyfriend Joseph Bates at the launch of Malone Souliers’ debut men’s footwear collection. ‘It was 60km (40 miles) over four days, but we were thrilled to raise over £140,000.’

Danielle Bux weds her U.S. lawyer beau

Life — Danielle Bux must surely reflect — is a game of two halves.

The Welsh beauty, whose seven-year marriage to football pundit Gary Lineker, left, ended in 2016, has just disclosed on social media that she married American entertainment lawyer Nate Greenwald, 44, in a discreet summer ceremony on the island of Nantucket, off the north-east coast of the U.S.

The couple already have a daughter, Romy Wren, born in 2017 after Danielle, 40, moved to the States. She captioned this image, above: ‘Throwback to our summer wedding.’

Silver screen star Leslie Caron turned out to support her pal Nicky Haslam, right, at the preview of the sale of the contents of his Hampshire retreat.

‘I don’t give a damn about my looks any more and that’s a wonderful thing about age — I have earned the right not to be young, not to be beautiful and I can just enjoy life,’ the 88-year-old pin-up — who in her heyday, left, starred in Gigi and An American In Paris — told me at Bonhams.

‘I love to look at all the young actors now, that’s my great pleasure. I love Olivia Colman, she’s a very skilful actress.’
