Creative home cooks are in a frenzy over a $7.50 sandwich maker from Kmart, and have been using it to whip up cakes.

While the device is normally used to toast sandwiches, a woman named Kelly recently used it to make miniature chocolate cakes.

Kelly took to Facebook to reveal that she was delighted with her ‘chocolate brevilles’ made using the handy gadget.

‘I used the 79 cent Coles cake mix. I’m going to try a brownie mix next,’ the woman wrote alongside photos showing the cakes served with ice cream, marshmallows and chocolate sauce.

So what was the secret to her success?

Her method involved making the cake batter as per instructions on the pack and spooning this directly onto sections of the heated sandwich press.

She went on to reveal that she cooked the mix for about three to five minutes but said timing would depend on whether you ‘want the cakes a bit gooey in the middle’.

The woman said one pack of cake mix had stretched to make 12 and that she still had ‘heaps of mixture in the fridge to cook more’.

One packet of cake mix can make up to 12 of the delicious treats and there's left over mixture which can be stored in the fridge for another day

Unsurprisingly, dozens of Facebook users were quick to comment on how brilliant they thought the woman’s clever cooking idea was.

‘This looks amazing!’ said one. ‘I have never seen it before but I am going to give it a go. Wow! What else do people put in them? Yum.’

Another said: ‘What? I must not be invited to the party. Did not know you could do this. Thanks for sharing.’

‘Imagine if you put a Rolo chocolate or something like that in the middle! Oh my! So excited!’ a third said.
