Wonder pill that cures flu symptoms in just TWO days arrives in Australia

‘One dose is all you need’: Wonder pill that cures flu symptoms in just TWO days is introduced in Australia

  • Xofluza is a one-dose pill which shortens amount of time people are sick with flu
  • There is a trial in Westmead Hospital, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital
  • Studies showed it cut amount of time people were sick from 3.3 days to 2.5 days
  • In Australia, there have already been 76,500 confirmed cases of the flu

A new pill that cures symptoms of the flu in just two days is being trialled in Australia.

The pill, called Xofluza, can reduce the severity of the flu and has been introduced at Australian hospitals.

Xofluza is different to other flu treatments as it stops the virus from growing, rather than halting it from moving through the body.

The pill is already being used in the United States and in Japan, and is being trialled at Westmead Hospital in Sydney and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

The pill cuts the time people spent sick on average from 3.3 days to 2.5 days, and reduced the length of a fever from 42 hours to one day.

Xofluza also limits the timeframe the virus can spread from four days to one day.

Professor Robert Booy from health organisation the Immunisation Coalition people ‘got better much quicker’ using Xofluza.

‘It’s not a cure, but it’s a very good treatment… One dose is all you have to have,’ he told Sunrise.

‘It’ll probably take months rather than years to approve the drug for use in Australia.’

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the pill in the US but say it is not a substitute for the flu vaccine, insisting that getting the shot is the best chance of protection.

In Australia, there have already been 76,500 confirmed cases of the flu.
