Woolworths selling 820g Cadbury Favourites for $32 to shock of many Aussies on Reddit

Cadbury’s Favourites appear to be the latest victim of Australia’s rampant inflation, with Woolworths now selling the treat for a whopping $32.

The price of the box of chocolates, which recently removed two popular treats, has angered Australians who say it’s ‘ridiculous’. Others joked you need Afterpay to fund the purchase.

Some said the price hike of the 820g box was just ‘in time for Mother’s Day’.

Favourites boxes are sold in different sizes depending on the retailer, making it harder for shoppers to compare prices.

However the $32 box breaks down to a whopping $3.90 per 100grams, while the ‘regular’ sized box works out at $2.12 per 100grams.

It’s the latest in a long line of beloved Aussie products that have seen their prices ramp up in recent months, including the Coles Mud Cake, Ritz Crackers, and Kettle Chips.

‘This is ridiculous, I’m contemplating on going a week protest of no sugar and no chocolate,’ one person wrote online in response to the price hike.

A picture from a Sydney supermarket was shared to Reddit, showing a large display of the chocolate treats with the hefty price tag.

‘Just in time for Mothers Day on the weekend. I’m sure it’s a coincidence, right?’ one person wrote.

‘Jesus, I’m going to have to start putting thought into casual acquaintances presents,’ wrote another.

‘Now with Afterpay,’ said one person, with another adding ‘in four easy repayments’.

‘Don’t worry, they will be a half price special of $16 next week,’ another added.

‘Better off buying the full sized bars on special at 90c each,’ wrote one.

‘It’s even more expensive when you account for throwing all the Moros in the bin,’ commented one.

‘That’s just taking the p*** now,’ said another.

Some suggested customers would be better off ‘buying 32 $1 full size bars’.

Woolworths and Cadbury have been contacted for comment.

It comes after chocolate lovers were devastated after Cadbury ditched two of the most popular flavours in the Favourites selection while also shrinking the size of the box.

Both the Dream and the Flake bars are gone, and will be replaced with a Caramilk and bite-sized Twirl.

The $32 boxes appeared to be ‘older stock’ as the original line up of treats were printed on the box.

The size of the smaler box has also shrunk from 570g to just 520g – with many online describing it as the ‘latest example of shrinkflation’.

After the new look box was spotted by an eagle-eyed shopper, many complained about the new options, while others said they were ‘way better’.

‘Shrinkflation has reached Favourites. Dream and Flake now replaced with Caramilk and Twirl,’ one Australian shared on Reddit.

‘Twirl is just a more structurally-sound version of Flake. Definitely an improvement in my opinion,’ one person wrote.

‘But those mini Flakes are the perfect size to crush over a bowl of ice cream,’ replied another.

‘Flake has a better texture. Twirl just doesn’t hit the same way. But I’m more disappointed in losing Dream,’ commented a third.

A fourth lamented ‘replacing Dream for Caramilk’.

‘Is this what we wanted, truly? If they’re actually basing this on what are statistically the most popular chocolates, very well, but! Show me the data, Cadbury!’ said another.

One person who claimed to work in the chocolate industry said that ‘dream is by far the lowest quality white chocolate’.

Twirl replacing Flake is fine but no Dream?? That’s like my favourite… (Caramilk is no Dream replacement),’ added another.

‘First they took the Bounty away and I said nothing. Then they took the Dream and Flake away and I still said nothing. But if the b*****ds touch the Turkish Delight I will be writing a strongly worded email to Carbury!’

Cadbury’s parent company, Mondelez International, said it regularly reviews  chocolates in order to ‘ensure the box is reflective of Australia’s favourite flavours’.

‘Caramilk and Twirl are among our most popular products and rightfully deserve their place in the Cadbury Favourites line-up,’ Alex Blair, Mondelez’s corporate and government affairs manager said.

‘Dream and Flake fans shouldn’t fear – both remain widely available in bar and share-bag formats.’
