Eagle-eyed shopper finds Woolworths’ tinned tomatoes with ‘no added salt’ contains MORE sodium than its regular version
- An eagle-eyed shopper spotted a ‘discrepancy’ between two tinned tomatoes
- Jason Moss said he checks the ingredients on labels due to a heart condition
- He found tin with ‘no added salt’ contains more sodium than regular version
An eagle-eyed shopper has discovered Woolworths’ tinned tomatoes with ‘no added salt’ contains more sodium content than its regular version.
Jason Moss, from Sydney, said he needs to steer away from foods that contain high amounts of sodium due to a heart condition.
So as part of his grocery shopping, Mr Moss said he’s required to check the ingredients on labels at all times to ensure he finds low-sodium options for his diet.
And so it came as a shock when he spotted the 27mg of sodium in the ‘Diced Italian Tomatoes’ and 60mg in the ‘Diced Italian Tomatoes No Added Salt’.
An eagle-eyed shopper, from Sydney, discovered the nutritional information of the regular 400g tinned tomatoes contains 27mg of sodium per 200g serving
‘There’s a discrepancy between the content and what they [Woolworths] are claiming on their labels,’ Mr Moss told Daily Mail Australia.
‘So that’s a bit dangerous with what they’re advertising, especially when you’ve got a heart problem. I just couldn’t work out whether it was a typo.
‘I checked a couple of the cans and they were all the same. It’s just puzzling. It’s a bit weird. It was confusing so I ended up going for another brand.’
A Woolworths spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia: ‘Woolworths is committed to making healthier eating easier for our customers.
‘We continuously review our Woolworths Own Brand products to look for opportunities to reduce salt, sugar and saturated fat content, whilst still delivering great tasting quality products our customers love.
‘Our product nutrition profile aims to be on par or better than competing products and each Own Brand adheres to strict nutrition guideline.’
Jason Moss said he was stunned to find the ‘no added salt’ tinned tomatoes contained 60mg of sodium per 200g serving – more than the regular alternative
Mr Moss said shopping for low sodium products was very important for his diet because of his heart condition.
‘It’s not about nitpicking, it’s about having a health issue. But the bottom line is you’ve got to read the ingredients,’ he said.
‘I suppose the concern on my mind is if you’ve got a health or dietary requirement, it’s really worth going past the big letters and going to the ingredients.
‘I’m not too sure if they’re allowed to write “no added salt” on anything but the labels need to be correct.’
Mr Moss claimed after he contacted the supermarket giant to explain what he discovered, the response he got added more to the confusion.
‘So I actually wrote to them and pointed out the normal can has 27mg of sodium while the “no added salt” has 60mg of sodium. It’s really clear on the labels,’ he said.
‘But they checked it, and responded that the normal can actually has 240mg of sodium and the no added salt tinned tomatoes has 60mg.
‘So what they’ve told me is completely wrong to what I saw on the labels. Even if it’s a typo, it’s still an issue. You’d have to recall this, people are relying on the information.’
