Woolworths warn shoppers of $2,000 gift card email scam

Woolworths have been targeted by a new scam weeks after it was revealed the company was double-charging customers for groceries.

The email scam is a response to customers being overcharged, which falsely promises to compensate customers who were affected, offering people ‘free $2000 Woolworths gift cards’.

‘You may have been overcharged by Woolworths,’ the scam email reads.

‘And we are very sorry for that.

‘As part of settlement we are offering you and 52 other Woolworths regulars a Gift Card worth $2000 to use on tons of great discounts at Woolworths.

The scam then highlights some of the special deals customers could buy with their too good to be true free gift cards, before prompting customers to click on a link.

The supermarket giant told Daily Mail Australia they had ‘no affiliation’ with the scam.

‘We have reported the scam to the ACCC’s SCAM Watch and advised our social media team,’ a Woolworths spokesperson said.

The company advises people affected by the scam to report it Woolworths.

Woolworths would not confirm the number of people affected by the scam.

One Facebook user said ‘a lot of people [will be] caught in this scam’ and was concerned about the affects it may have on elderly people.

Another user posted ‘scams get texted to people every day’ and advised people if they opened the scam messages, their phones would be ‘made useless’.

The gift card scam comes as a response weeks after the supermarket giant revealed they were charging their customers double for their groceries they bought six months ago.

Thousands of angry Woolworths customers were re-charged for groceries they bought in March, leaving many unable to pay for bills and other groceries.

The supermarket did later reimburse customers after the ‘error at their data centre’ meant customers ‘received incorrect transactions on accounts’.

If people are affected by any Woolworths scam they should report it on 1300 767 969.
