The world’s coldest city in Siberia hit a temperature of 89F yesterday, making it warmer than Spanish sunspots like Majorca and Marbella.
Yakutsk, built on permafrost in eastern Russia and with winter temperatures nudging minus -76F, was also hotter than Yemen on the Arabian peninsula.
The unusual heat wave in vast diamond-rich Yakutia region, with straddles the Arctic, sent locals scurrying to the ‘world’s most unusual beach’ – a glacier – to chill on the ice.

Yakutia – officially known as the Sakha Republic – covers a swathe of Siberia and geographically is almost as large as India.
Buluus glacier lies in a deep valley some 60 miles south of Yakutsk surrounded by pristine pine forests and lush green meadows.
‘This is for real, your eyes are not failing you, it’s ice,’ wrote local woman Zhanna Myasnikova as she shared pictures of herself enjoying the refreshing day at the glacier.
‘The Buluus glacier is a fantastic place to be in the middle of summer when the air heats to over 30C.

Yakutia – officially known as the Sakha Republic – covers a swathe of Siberia and geographically is almost as large as India.
It is nicknamed Russia’s Kingdom of Cold – and the heatwave is expected to be short-lived.
