Whisky galore! World’s largest private collection of Scotch is set to fetch up to £8million at auction

  • World’s largest private whisky collection to go under the hammer early next year
  • The trove belonged to PepsiCo bottling magnate who built it up over decades
  • The collection of almost 4,000 whisky bottles will be sold online early next year

The world’s largest private collection of whisky could fetch up to £8million when it goes under the hammer next year.

The trove of more than 3,900 bottles includes two of ‘the most legendary, most expensive whiskies ever produced’, say auctioneers.

They are a 1926 Fine and Rare Macallan – a bottle of which sold for £1.5million earlier this year – and a Macallan 1926 Valerio Adami.

The collection belonged to Richard Gooding, a PepsiCo bottling magnate, who built it up over decades, regularly travelling to Scotland from the US to source rare bottles from distilleries and auction houses before his death in 2014.

He kept the whiskies in a ‘pub’ at his home in Colorado, specially designed to display the collection.

Mr Gooding’s widow Nancy said his favourite dram was Black Bowmore and added: ‘Collecting Scotch was one of Richard’s greatest passions. He loved every aspect of it.’

The collection will be sold on the Whisky Auctioneer website in February and April next year.
