Wrestler fighting for his life after rival hits him in head with concrete block

A wrestler is fighting for his life in hospital after a rival threw a concrete block at his head during a Mexican ‘death match.’

Puerto Rican wrestler El Cuervo remains in intensive care following emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain after the Monday match.

His rival, Angel o Demonio (Angel or Demon), 54, whose real name is Hector Gonzalez, has been indefinitely suspended by the Mexican Boxing and Wrestling Commission for the horrifying attack. Gonzalez claims it was a bad throw and he’d been aiming for El Cuervo’s back.

El Cuervo, who has been competing in the no-rules ‘Profane Rumors’ match in Mexico for the newly formed wrestling company Associated Promoters of Lucha Libre.

The wrestler repeatedly struck Angel o Demonio with a steel chair before Demonio went backstage area and returned armed with a concrete block.

Footage shows Cuervo searching for his own weapon under the ring apron while fans cheer both men on, only for Demonio to launch the brick at him from behind.

Cuervo, 44, whose real name is Jaime Correa, was knocked out immediately having been completely unprepared for the missile.

After the referee and an on-site physician tended to him, he was able to get back on his feet and walk to the locker room before he was transported to a hospital.

Several hours later, his manager confirmed his client was still alive but in intensive care.

During a post match interview, Angel o Demonio expressed remorse over his failed shot, which he explained was meant to land on his opponents back.

Instead it delivered a near fatal blow after missing his intended target.

Shockingly, Gonzalez went into character, interjecting the storied rivalry that has existed in a real ring between Mexican boxers their famous Puerto Rican counterparts of the past, Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho’, who was murdered in 2012, and Wilfredo Benitez, who is currently battling boxer’s dementia.

‘Now it’s your turn to lose. I’m sorry brother,’ Angel o Demonio shouted.

However, Angel o Demonio felt otherwise Wednesday over his out of line remarks.

‘My intention was to hit him in the back, but when he gets up the brick is already in the air,’ Angel o Demonio told Mexican news outlet Pasala.

‘I want people to know that my intention was not to hurt him, on the contrary, I wanted to make a good fight with a person who is not qualified to fight extreme. The guy is not prepared and it’s not that I want to excuse myself, he’s a strong guy, handsome, elegant, but not extreme.’

Professional wrestling stars have reacted with fury following the vicious attack, with former Olympic gold medal winning athlete Kurt Angle slamming the man online.

The World Wrestling Entertainment star wrote on Twitter: ‘Give me 10 seconds with that stupid MFer that threw the brick. Shouldn’t be anywhere near the business.’

An investigation has now been opened into why the promoters held an extreme wrestling match to begin with when such events are banned.
