Wriggles galore! Meet Superworm, the most unlikely hero of the season
- Superworm by Julia Donaldson has been adapted for a BBC animated film
- Villain Wizard Lizard wants to use the worm’s tunnelling skills to dig for treasure
- Matt Smith who voices Superworm says story about friends is fit for Christmas
A worm makes for an unlikely superhero – but in the hands of children’s author Julia Donaldson it becomes an altogether different proposition.
Meet the ‘super long, super strong’ star of this year’s animated BBC Christmas film Superworm, adapted from the book by the much-loved author and its illustrator Axel Scheffler.
It’s the latest festive adaptation of one of Julia’s books, much to the writer’s delight. ‘It’s wonderful seeing my creations brought to life, especially at Christmas,’ she says.

‘It’s very special seeing all the clever things the animators have done.’ Superworm’s a vain chap but he’s fun to have around town, morphing into a skipping rope, a bungee cord and even a trampoline for his friends.
The villain is the mean Wizard Lizard (left, with Superworm), who wants to use the worm’s tunnelling skills to dig for treasure. ‘Wizard Lizard’s not a good egg,’ says narrator Olivia Colman, just one of many big names lending their star quality.
‘He’s willing to do anything in his power to get critters to help him find sparkly things and he doesn’t care about their well-being.’ Joining her as the voice of Superworm himself is Matt Smith. ‘He’s up for life,’ says Matt.
‘He’s high-energy, he’s happy, he’s brave. He’s sort of vain and ridiculous and has ideas above his station but deep down he has a good heart. ‘It’s about friendship really. It’s funny and charming with a lightness and hopefulness fit for Christmas Day.’
