X Factor winner Samantha Jade reveals she suffers from a crippling mental health problem and says it got worse during the Covid pandemic

Samantha Jade has opened up about her ongoing battle with crippling anxiety which prevented her from living life to the fullest.

The X Factor winner, 35, revealed in a tell-all interview with 7News on Saturday that anxiety runs in her family and it impacted her in numerous ways during the Covid pandemic.

‘Anxiety was something I knew about because it had been in my family. I got hit with such strong anxiety when I couldn’t leave the house,’ she said.

Fortunately, Samantha discovered an effective coping strategy that made her feel less alone.

She said: ‘I started just talking to people in my team, found others had gone through the same thing, and I was like, “Oh my God”.’

‘Talking about it made me feel less anxious, because you realise you’re not alone,’ she added.

Samantha also said regular sessions with a psychologist helped her feel less overwhelmed by her emotions.

‘If you’re going to the gym, you should be going to therapy – you need to work on your mind, not just your body.’

Earlier this year, Samantha released a single in honour of her late mother Jacqueline.

She also revealed her mother’s heartbreaking final moments before she passed away from breast cancer in 2014.

Samantha told Yahoo Lifestyle ‘she would still dance in her little bed, just the top of her body, and she’d make me dance around the room’.

The singer won X Factor 10 years ago and is planning a reunion show touring Australia.
