Gao remains in custody over the alleged sexual assault of a female film production worker at Sydney’s Shangri-La hotel in March, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Xuan – whom married Gao in 2011 and is, in the eyes of the Chinese media, the more famous of the pair – previously released a statement insisting that she believed her husband was innocent.

‘Sorry for making everyone worry. I believe in him,’ she declared.

Gao has pleaded not guilty to the two counts of aggravated sexual assault in company that have been levelled against him.

He and producer Jim Wang, both 35, were arrested in March after they were accused of sexually assaulting a 36-year-old woman following a ‘wrap up’ party for a television series they’d been filming in Sydney.

The series was titled Love in Aranya, and the wrap-up party saw the actors and crew dining at the Red Chilli Sichuan restaurant in Chinatown before heading to the Gala KTV Karaoke Club, police claim.

The sexual assault allegedly took place at the Shangri-La hotel room in the early hours of March 27.

During an earlier bail application for Gao in April, a Local Court heard that the victim had sustained severe bruising and that blood and semen had been found in the room.

One man was taken into custody from inside his Shangri-La hotel room the day after the alleged incident, while the other was arrested shortly thereafter at Haymarket, in the city’s CBD.

Gao’s barrister at the time of April’s bail hearing insisted that his client was not a flight risk, stating that ‘It would be, in effect, Hugh Jackman committing an offence in China and fleeing.’

Magistrate Sharon Freund nonetheless formally refused that bail appeal, noting that the police allegations made for a ‘very sobering read’.

Justice Lucy McCallum told the court on Thursday that she expected to deal with Gao’s bail application after ruling on other cases.

Gao has acted in three movies – including the 2012 hit Drug War – and 12 Chinese television series.

He and wife Xuan had a daughter, who’s nickname is ‘Little Dimple’, in June of 2016.
