Yorkshire thief strolls into frail couple’s home and steals £100

This shocking footage shows the moment an alleged conman walked into an extremely vulnerable pensioner’s home and brazenly stole £100 from under his nose.

The CCTV clip, which was taken in Dinnington, South Yorkshire, shows the man walk into the home of an elderly couple through their unlocked back door and tell them he will paint their roof for £320.

At the time the elderly man, who is 92 and has prostate cancer, was resting on the sofa as he was feeling unwell while his wife, 86, who is in the latter stages of Alzheimer’s disease and has ovarian cancer, was sitting in the corner.

After talking to the couple about ‘fixing’ their roof he handed the elderly man, who was confused due to his illness, his wallet and paced impatiently while the pensioner looked for cash, before eventually snatching up £100 and leaving the property.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV footage which the couple’s children had installed for safety reasons. The door was unlocked to allow carers, who visit the couple four times a day, easy access to the house.

The couple’s son-in-law, who asked to remain anonymous, told MailOnline: ‘I don’t know how anybody who could do that can sleep at night for the sake of £100.

‘He phoned us a few minutes after it happened and said “I’ve been robbed”. Because he’s been ill it’s made him confused so we weren’t even sure it had happened, but we called the police and rushed over and sure enough, it was all there on the CCTV.

‘We put the footage up on Facebook and straight away it had thousands of shares and comments, and people recognised him and  said he’s done this sort of thing before. They said he’s a nasty piece of work.’

Despite immediately contacting police about the incident, which happened on February 2, and giving them the footage, he says that officers have not made any arrests.

‘But we haven’t heard anything from the police in weeks, even though they’ve got a name and his face,’ he said. ‘The police have had several anonymous phone calls naming the same man, but as of yet we have heard nothing.’

‘My father-in-law is very shaken by the incident, he’s very, very nervous.

‘He says he doesn’t feel safe in his own home anymore and he keeps asking everyone if they’ve locked the door. We’ve had to install a key safe so the carers can unlock the door and let themselves in.’

The burglar wore a baggy blue top and khaki jogging bottoms and had distinctive red hair. Shortly before he entered the property he and another man could be seen setting up ladders outside the house.

MailOnline has contacted South Yorkshire Police for comment.
