Young father who pelted with rocks as he drove slams those responsible ‘for putting lives at risk’

A young father is thankful to be alive after his car was pelted with rocks in a horrific attack on an expressway.

Jake Waring, 19, from South Australia was driving home on the Southern Expressway at about 12.30am when his windscreen was struck by rocks, 9news reported.

‘Honestly, it scared the life out of me,’ Waring said.

‘Scumbags! We’re out here trying to make an honest living just trying to go about our lives and you’ve got these people trying to make inconveniences. It’s not needed.’

Mr Waring said the violent attack, which put his life at risk, was unnecessary and stupid.

Police have revealed that the incident has brought the number of reported rock attacks to 37 for 2018.

In the past fortnight, 15 reports were recorded.

South Australia’s government has been criticised by opposition leaders for not doing enough to protect motorists.

‘Rock throwing is now out of control. There isn’t a motorist who uses the Southern Expressway who literally doesn’t fear for their life being compromised,’ said pposition leader Peter Malinauskas.

Mr Malinauskas believes that there are appropriate measures that could be implemented to fix the problem in the interim – temporary fencing and security patrols.

‘We’ve got an unprecedented spate in rock throwing, there are actions the government is capable of taking and they’re not doing it,’ he said.

The Transport Minister, Stephan Knoll, disagreed with the opposition leaders remarks, saying that preventative measures were already in place.

This includes thirteen CCTV camera – to hopefully catch the rock-throwers – and wire mesh covering loose rocks.

The Minister said that the government acted swiftly to deal with the difficult issue.

‘I think South Australians can be assured that the South Australian police take this very seriously and are deploying all of the resources that they think are necessary to try and catch these idiots,’ said Minister Knoll.
