A young girl has been attacked by a shark at an idyllic swimming spot off Queensland’s coast.

The nine-year-old girl was swimming in the ocean off North West Island, 75km from Gladstone in central Queensland, about 5.30pm Wednesday when she was bitten.

Queensland Ambulance confirmed the girl was suffering a leg laceration from the potential minor shark bite.

Emergency services rushed via boat to the island to retrieve the girl who is in a stable condition, Courier Mail reported.

The boat is believed to get to Herron Island about 8pm local time before she is airlifted to hospital.

It comes a week after a man was airlifted to hospital after he was bitten by a shovelnose shark while swimming in the same area.

A RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter arrived on the scene off the north-east coast of Gladstone at 1.20pm on December 30.

The man, believed to be in his 30s and from the Bundaberg region, was bitten on his hand and knee and suffered minor injuries.

But the shark did not draw much blood and the man walked away largely unscathed from the incident.

He was flown to Gladstone Hospital in a stable condition but walked himself from the helicopter for treatment.
