A young mother allegedly stabbed her own daughter in the head during a terrifying knife rampage on Tuesday night.

The 26-year-old was walking along a street with her daughter in the New South Wales Hunter Region’s Salamander Bay when she pulled out a knife still in its sheaf.

At around 5.30pm she allegedly got into the back of a car at an intersection and attacked the driver and his 15-year-old daughter, causing him minor injuries.

The woman then allegedly entered a supermarket with her daughter, causing staff and customers to flee in panic.

She apparently injured several men by slashing at them as they ran from the store before turning the sheathed knife on her own daughter, injuring her scalp.

Officers arrived and arrested the woman. The knife was sheathed throughout the incident.

The woman was put under police guard in hospital and will be given a mental health assessment.

Her daughter was taken to John Hunter Hospital where she is being treated for lacerations to her scalp which are considered non-life-threatening.
