Young single mother ‘drives head on into a crowd of relatives’ after a heated family feud

A family lunch turned into a near death incident after a woman allegedly attempted to run down her own relatives after the boozy family lunch.

Da Nika Blaise Coffin, 27, had got behind the wheel of her Mitsubishi Magna at about 10pm in Padbury when a dispute allegedly broke out between her and a number of her family, Perth News reported.

The court heard the dispute escalated on Friday until family members allegedly began to throw rocks and bricks at Ms Coffin’s car before she pulled out and drove off.

However after dropping off passengers a short distance away the court heard Ms Coffin allegedly returned and attempted to run down a group of relatives still outside the house.

The family members had to jump out of the way of the oncoming car the prosecutor said.

‘If they hadn’t jumped out the way they would have been hit,’ he told the court.

This allegedly prompted them to begin throwing rocks and bricks at Ms Coffin’s car again until she ‘lined up’ her 23-year-old cousin and struck her with her car, travelling at 40km/h.

The young woman was rag dolled into the air and suffered a broken ankle as a result of the impact.

When police arrived on the scene a short time later Coffin allegedly told them she intended on running her cousin down.

‘I wanted to run that c*** over,’ she allegedly said.

Ms Coffin’s lawyer, Andrew Matthews, said the two women had been enjoying each other’s company and drinking alcohol for much of the day leading up to the incident and there had been no signs of what was to come.

‘It was a highly volatile situation in which she found herself under attack,’ he said.

Mr Matthews said as a result of the family launching rocks and bricks at her car, Coffin was simply acting in ‘self-preservation’.

However Magistrate questioned those claims, saying it was hard to understand why Ms Coffin would leave under attack only to return again moments later.

Ms Coffin faced the Perth Magistrates Court on charges of with act or omission doing bodily harm and having a blood alcohol content of 0.101 and was granted bail.

The magistrate also ordered a $4000 surety and for Ms Coffin to report to police twice a week, she was also ordered to remain at least 200m from the family property.

Ms Coffin will face the Perth Magistrates Court again on July 3.
