British greyhounds are ‘sold to China then boiled alive’

Retired British racing dog are being sold to China by their owners where they are boiled alive and eaten for profit.

The shocking treatment has been unveiled by a campaigner who is trying to save more dogs from this cruel fate when they are taken off the track.

Greyhounds provide owners with varying profits during their racing careers depending on how successful they are.

But once that source of  income dries up they are shipped off to China for a final lump sum, rather than being allowed to enjoy a dignified retirement.

Kerry Elliman has rescued 758 greyhounds in five years through her two centres, the Birmingham Greyhound Protection and Candy Cane Rescue, in Beijing

Once there, they are kept in squalid conditions – starved, stripped of their fur and beaten before being cooked in scolding hot water.

Kerry Elliman has been raising awareness of the pooches’ plight in both the Far East, as well as in other Asian countries, such as Pakistan.

A post on the website Birmingham Greyhound Protection showing her posing with a greyhound she rescued, Frankie, and her eight puppies.

She posted: ‘She was rescued by Candy Cane Rescue, as she was for sale for a pitiful amount of money, along with her 8 puppies.

‘By the time she was collected four of her puppies were dead next to her and row more died at the vets.’

She has rescued 758 greyhounds in five years through her two centres, the Birmingham Greyhound Protection and Candy Cane Rescue, in Beijing.

She has described the horrific states she has found greyhounds in, with many carrying infections when they are brought in.

She added: They[the owners] are not happy with making money from a decent business, they export racing greyhounds for a lot of money to top up their earnings. We know they export to Pakistan as well.

‘I hope these greedy vile people are happy with what they have done and the problems and suffering they have created for these noble dogs. It’s about time the racing industry is brought down.

‘It’s full of abuse and greed. Frankie and her two remaining puppies are now safe in the UK.’

Some are sold for a pittance if they are going straight on the scrapheap, while others can fetch up to around £300,000 if they still have some racing left in them when they are sold.

But Ms Elliman is now on a campaign to make sales of dogs to China illegal under UK law.

She told the Sunday Mirror: ‘I understand there are different values and a different culture in China. It upsets me that animals there are treated with so little respect.

‘But why do we have to participate in it? Trainers claim they are being exported to countries with welfare.

‘But once they are gone you’ve got no idea what’s happening to them.’
