BT Sport pundits Lampard and Hoddle heap praise on Dzeko

Edin Dzeko scored twice for Roma on Wednesday night as they drew 3-3 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Dzeko’s first goal of the evening, which brought Roma level in the 64th minute, was special.

Former Tottenham defender Federico Fazio played a long ball over the top and Dzeko, who had followed the flight of the ball into the Chelsea penalty area, lashed a left-footed volley over the head of Thibaut Courtois and into the goal.

Already it is being spoken about as a contender for UEFA’s goal of the season.

It would seem that BT Sport pundits Frank Lampard and Glenn Hoddle feel the same way.

Former Chelsea midfielder Lampard went as far as to compare the goal to Marco van Basten’s strike for Holland in the 1988 European Championship final and Robin van Persie’s volley for Manchester United against Aston Villa in 2013.

Lampard said: [I] think of the Van Persie’s and Van Basten’s and it’s right up there with those volleys.

‘You can hit 50 in training but it’s so hard to even get one perfect. He watches it until the last minute and hopes his foot is in the right position.’

Sportsmail columnist Hoddle spoke of how he was impressed with the former Manchester City striker’s technique to execute such a finish.

‘He’s up in the air and has to leap with both feet,’ Hoddle said. ‘He’s had to make the spin, movement, everything, keep eye on the ball all the time and get his body where it was – it was just magnificent.’
