Clarke Carlisle tweets thanks for messages of support

Clarke Carlisle has broken his silence over his mystery disappearance that sparked a Police manhunt in September.

The former Burnley defender, who has a history of battling mental illness, disappeared for 12 hours before he was found in Liverpool.

His wife Carrie has since spoken about the ordeal, but Clarke himself reached out to well wishers on Thursday for the first time, thanking them for all their messages.

‘I can’t begin to thank you all for your love and support in recent weeks,’ he tweeted.

‘I know I’m not alone, and neither are any of you.’

The hashtag #SmallSteps appeared alongside the tweet, as he continues on the road to recovery.

Carlisle tried to take his own life in 2014 and was found badly injured on the A64 in North Yorkshire. 

He was found and comforted by van driver Chris Kilbride, who subsequently took his on life a year later. 

Carlisle’s professional career spanned 16 years and nine different clubs. He was also the chairman of the PFA
