Did Matthew Newtown secretly marry Catherine Schneiderman?

He’s had a tumultuous past, due to legal woes and ongoing personal struggles.

But it appears Matthew Newton, 40, may finally have something to celebrate with reports claiming the troubled actor has secretly wed fiancee Catherine Schneiderman, 23.

A family friend reportedly told New Idea this week that the couple exchanged ‘I dos’ at the home of Catherine’s mother in New York and while Matthew’s parents, Bert and Patti, did not attend, they are thrilled.

‘[Matthew] rang his parents prior to the big day and invited them but with Bert’s health being a little strained in recent months they decided a long-haul flight to New York might not be a great idea,’ the source explained.

‘This is the best news ever for Bert and Patti … they’re just so happy for Matthew.

The insider added: ‘Matthew’s battled a lot of demons over the years, but he finally feels like he’s found his place in the world in New York with Cat.’

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Matthew Newton for comment.

The wedding news comes after the couple, who got engaged in October last year, denied split rumours in March.

Entertainment reporter Peter Ford told the Kyle and Jackie O show that he spoke to Matthew’s mother Patti who rubbished the claims.

‘That’s rubbish. He’s fine. He’s getting married, they’re engaged – I don’t think they’ve set a wedding date yet,’ Peter explained.

Catherine and Matthew first sparked engagement rumours in October, after she stepped out wearing a diamond ring.

At the time, Matthew’s famous parents, Bert, 79, and Patti, 72, said they were ‘thrilled.’

‘Patti and I are thrilled,’ Bert told The Herald Sun. ‘We love him as a son, and this is the best thing we could hope for.’

However, not everyone offered well-wishes for the couple, with Matthew’s former assault victim, Ariel Bory Vargas, previously calling the engagement a ‘shame.’

Shortly thereafter, the Melbourne-native, who suffers from bipolar disorder, checked into the Betty Ford Centre in California for 90 days of alcohol and drug treatment.

The assault against Ariel is among a long list of legal woes Matthew has had over the years, which include assault charges against former girlfriends Brooke Satchwell and Rachael Taylor.

Despite his dark past, the actor captured the heart of American Catherine, whose father Eric has campaigned tirelessly against domestic violence.

Earlier this week an unconfirmed report by Woman’s Day claimed the couple might be expecting their first child.

‘I don’t wish anything bad against him, but it’s a pity… a shame,’ Ariel previously told photographers in Miami, Florida in May.

In 2012 Underbelly star Matthew was arrested twice in Miami for trespassing and resisting arrest and battery.

Charges were later dropped although the Melbourne-native was ordered to pay $11,500 in restitution to Ariel, and to complete 50 hours of community service.
