Google Maps sends tourists down dead-end street 30km away

  • Google Maps has been sending tourists almost two hours away from destination
  • Instead of being taken to Blue Mountains, Google Maps took tourists to a street
  • Valley View Road was flooded with lost tourists thinking it was Blue Mountains

Google Maps has been sending hundreds of tourists more than an hour away from their desired destination.

For the last few years, tourists wanting to experience The Blue Mountains have been taken to a dead-end street, an hour round trip, away from the iconic natural beauty.

Earlier this year, Waleed Mehar posted to Facebook saying they spent two-and-a-half hours driving but when they thought they had arrived at The Blue Mountains, they found an unfortunate sign.

‘Blue Mountains is not here,’ the hand made sign by a resident said.

‘Google Maps is wrong.

‘You need to go to Katoomba or Blackheath.’

Instead of ending up at The Blue Mountains, tourists were being taken to Valley View Road, Dargan, a dead-end cul-de-sac 30 kilometres north of Katoomba.

Resident Karen McLaughlin told Fairfax Media huge numbers of lost tourists and a ‘car every few minutes’ had been flooding their street daily during summer holidays for about two years.

‘These tourists do not realise they are quickly coming to a cul-de-sac, over a crest, and often approach then end of the street at speed and have to break sharply,’ Ms McLaughlin.

‘Google can have all their super technology, but if the data has millions of errors it is useless.’

The publication reported that the issue had been fixed after being contacted.
