The other was taken to Ballarat Hospital for observation.

‘They were doing circuits around the airport and something has happened,’ said Garry Baum, the owner of the airport, The Herald Sun reported.

‘We don’t know what [happened] and it [the helicopter] has come down to land and skidded across.’

Civil Aviation Safety Authority spokesman Peter Gibson said it was likely the helicopter pilots were training at the time.

‘They were doing circuits at Lethbridge which often means they are training,’ he said.

‘It was a hard landing, they were coming in to land and obviously something went wrong.’

The cause of the crash is yet to be determined.
