Kmart has been slammed over its new store layout, which sees customers paying in the middle of the store.

The Australian discount chain now has cash registers in the centre, rather than on the way out.

Customers overwhelmingly said they were dissatisfied with the new design labelling it inefficient and disorientating, according to a recent News Corp poll.

‘Hate it, you end up lining up twice, especially when it’s really busy and they only have one person on the door checking bags and all check-outs are open,’ said one shopper.

‘Sometimes there’s a huge line just to get out after you’ve paid.’

Shoppers also said they were made to feel like thieves, with security guards placed at the front of the store to check receipts and ‘pat down’ customers.

‘The pat down drives me insane,’ one shopper said.

‘I don’t like it. Surely it would increase theft too? One woman at the door can’t check through every bag and trolley thoroughly,’ said another.

The retail giant changed store layouts about a year ago in 148 stores across Australia.

Retail analysts believe having the register in the centre of the store may tempt customers to go back and purchase more as they walk past more items on their way out.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Kmart for comment.
